New olive oil labels in force

New olive oil labels in force
The Regulation (EU) amending key provisions on olive oil labelling has entered into force.

With the publication (in L 197/ 3 August 2018) of Regulation 2018/1096, the amendments to the basic Regulation 29/2012 on the labelling of olive oils entered into force. The amendments concern three points:

α) The indication of maximum acidity may only be indicated provided that it is accompanied by the indications for peroxides, K232 and K270, waxes, in characters of the same size, in the same visual field, and referring to the maximum values foreseen at the date of minimum durability of the olive oil.

(b) The indication of the year of harvest is optional for operators and 100% of the (extra) virgin olive oil content must come from that harvest.

(c) Member States have the right to make it compulsory to indicate the harvest year, but this should be limited to domestically produced olive oils from olive fruit harvested exclusively on their territory.

It should also be noted that the regulation will come into force after six months.
