Circular on: “Granting of a permit for the circulation of a tanker for the transport of water for human consumption”
The new D1d/G.P. 68056/8.11.2017 circular on: “Granting of a registration certificate for a tanker vehicle for the transport of water for human consumption” specifies the requirements for the granting of a certificate of suitability for a tanker vehicle for the transport of water for human consumption.

Main points:
A. 1 Water for human consumption, according to the relevant legislation (ref. a,b) is not included in the concept of food, is provided under the obligation of the State to all citizens of the territory as a public good, not subject to market rules and governed by the laws of sanitary engineering
2. The sale and transport of water for human consumption is governed by the terms and conditions of (a) & (c) relevant legislation issued by the Ministry of Health, which has the executive role in monitoring water for human consumption in the territory, and its implementation is entrusted to the competent sanitary bodies.

Specifically:
(a) the sale of water for drinking from a privately owned source , requires the granting of a permit by the relevant Municipal Authority after an opinion from the relevant Health Service.
In order to obtain the opinion of the Health Department in this respect, it must carry out an on-site inspection of the source and take samples for microbiological and chemical analysis.
b) The transport of water by tankers, boats, containers is carried out after obtaining the relevant permit from the relevant Municipal Authority and a certificate indicating the origin of the water to be drunk.
The type of water and its origin will be indicated on the tank, ship or container and this will be confirmed by the relevant Municipal Authority.
Tanks, vessels, etc. will be made of metal not susceptible to oxidation and will not have internal lead welds, will have a filling spout at the bottom which will be tightly closed with an iron screw cap. The tanks and containers shall be filled with pumps and iron pipes and the water shall be supplied by means of a tap and iron pipes. Once a week they will be cleaned and disinfected under the control of the concerned sanitary department and Municipal Authority.

c) It shall be done:
1. chemical determination of hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc. to confirm that no migration of chemicals has occurred in the ΄΄contained water΄΄ thereof or that there has been no other use in the immediate past.
2. Sanitary inspection of tanks and hydraulic fittings (piping, valves, etc.), tanks, vessels, etc. For the suitability of the tank construction material and any coatings of the inner walls, there should be cooperation with the competent services of the G.H.K.
